Notes from Kalimpong...

Kalimpong is a small, lively hill station in the northern part of West Bengal and stands at an average height of 1,250 metres. It overlooks the beautiful Teesta Valley and is home to diverse indigenous ethnic tribes and communities and their cultures though majority of the populace are ethnic Nepali whose ancestors had migrated to Kalimpong several decades ago. Hence, the place has a mix of various rich cultures and an influence of a broad realm.

The first thing you need to know about Kalimpong is that it is NOT ‘IN’ Darjeeling – it is a sub-division of the latter. I felt the need to say this because ever since I moved to Kolkata for college, I realized most people know where Darjeeling is, but have never heard of Kalimpong. They ask me, “Where are you from?” I say “Kalimpong.” They say “Ohh achcha achcha.. Darjeeling.” …I mean c’mon, Siliguri technically is a sub-division of Darjeeling but it remains Siliguri and Kalimpong doesn’t?

In Kalimpong, round every bend, you find a story and growing up here has given me a fair amount of good stories to tell. I hope to take you on delightful trip to Kalimpong through this blog, not as a traveler, but as a resident of this amazing town and share with you anecdotes and experiences that wrap the best of Kalimpong in them. Welcome aboard!
